Scalp Micro Pigmentation?

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure in which tiny dots of pigment are deposited into the upper layer of the scalp using fine needles, creating the appearance of hair follicles. Often described as a specialised form of cosmetic tattooing, it is used to replicate the look of a closely shaved head, add the impression of density to thinning hair, or camouflage scars from injury or hair transplant surgery. Unlike a traditional tattoo, SMP uses purpose-made pigments and shallower needle penetration so the dots stay small and crisp, without blurring or shifting colour over time. Treatment is typically carried out over two to four sessions spaced a week or more apart, allowing the practitioner to gradually build up density and match the shade to the client’s natural hair colour and skin tone. Results generally last several years before a top-up is needed, as the pigment gradually fades with sun exposure and natural skin renewal. It does not regrow hair or stop hair loss, but it offers a low-maintenance, immediate visual solution for people with male or female pattern baldness, alopecia, or receding hairlines.

What is scalp micropigmentation?

SMP is a non-surgical treatment that places tiny dots of pigment in the scalp to look like hair follicles. It can recreate a closely shaved look, make thinning hair look denser, or hide scars.

Is it the same as a tattoo?

It’s related, but the technique is different. SMP uses purpose-made pigments, finer needles and shallower depth, so the dots stay small and natural-looking and don’t blur or turn blue or green.

How much does it cost?

Does it hurt?

Most clients describe it as mild discomfort or a scratching feeling rather than pain. How much you feel varies from person to person and from one area of the scalp to another.

Does it grow hair or stop hair loss?

No. SMP changes how your scalp looks. It doesn’t regrow hair or slow hair loss, but it can be combined with treatments that do.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually 3–4 sessions, spaced at least 10-14 days apart. Density is built up gradually, so the full result shows after the final session.

How long does it last?

Results typically last several years before a top-up is needed. Pigment fades gradually, and sun exposure, chlorinated water, oily skin and lifestyle all affect how quickly.

How long does each session take?

Usually 2–3 hours, depending on the size of the area and the density you want.

What aftercare is involved?

Keep the scalp dry for the first few days and avoid shampoo and hair products for about a week. Stay out of direct sun, saunas, swimming and heavy exercise during healing.

What is recovery like?

Expect redness for a day or two and some mild tenderness or itching. Most people return can return to work the same day.

What if I go grey?

SMP pigment is a dark, neutral shade that still looks natural against greying stubble, and top-ups can be lightened over time.

Do I need to shave my head?

Only if you want the shaved look. If you’re adding density to longer hair, you don’t need to shave.
